Ever wake up on a Sunday craving waffles, but without the gluten? While it tastes great, waffles with regular flour and sugary syrup aren’t always the best option. They can send you into a carb coma, and who wants that when you have great adventures planned for your weekend?
After eating these Gluten-Free Spirulina Waffles, you can hike to the summit of a mountain, take up kickboxing, or plan world domination. Okay, maybe that’s a tad over the top. But there’s some truth to the fact that food is the mediator between what it is we want, and what we achieve.

What makes this Waffle Recipe Different?
This recipe uses brown rice flour rather than traditional white flour, date syrup instead of sugar, and has spirulina added for additional health benefits. Let’s talk about some of those:
- Brown Rice Flour has a low glycemic index, meaning it won’t spike your blood sugar
- Date Syrup is packed with dietary potassium, fiber, iron and magnesium
- Spirulina is an algae rich in B vitamins, and of course adds that beautiful green color!
Gluten-Free Spirulina Waffles Recipe
To a food processor or blender, add the following ingredients:
- 1 and a half cup brown rice flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 3 tbsp spirulina
- One-half tsp salt
- 1 cup soy milk
- One quarter cup coconut oil
- 2 eggs
- 3 tbsp date syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Heat up your waffle iron and spray the insides of the iron with cooking spray, such as coconut oil spray. I used a mini-waffle iron, but use whatever you have! Add a quarter cup to a half cup of batter to the iron, and cook for less than a minute until done.
Serve with your favorite berries, date syrup, and powdered sugar over the top!
